5 out of 5 stars High-End sound on a budget   June 17, 2010
-J (Houston, TX)
I purchased two sets of MB Quart Premium PVI216 6.5" 2-Way components off of Amazon for 105.00 and they are well worth the price. I had an old High-End system I had pulled out of my old car about 3 years ago that I wanted o re-use and needed some good components for a reasonable price. I had them professionally installed in my VW Jetta. They are being pushed by a PPI amp that has an RMS of 125w per channel @ 4ohm and these are nice. They produce a well rounded sound and you can hear the quality. I cannot turn the gain up on the amp at all so I would recommend sticking to a good 75w amp. They are complemented by a Pioneer Premier Head unit and a 10"w7 sub. If you are on a budget and you install these properly you will not get a better speaker for less than 450.00 a pair. They handle power very well, get loud to make your ears ring and are clear at the same time. The only thing is that the tweeters are a little bright but you can adjust that through the crossover.

5 out of 5 stars Same HQ as always from MB Quart   June 3, 2010

Like others I was aware that Maxxsonics acquired MB Quart so I was a little wary of just how this might change the product. First off let me say that I have been an MB Quart owner in the past, my first set was a pair of 5.25" Reference Series don't remember the model number but I remember paying over $400 for a pair in 1997. A few years later I went with an upgrade after my car was broken into put an alarm in, added a amp and went with the PSD 216 6.5" component set (about $500 as I recall). I thought the 5.25" were great but after installing the PSD 216's I was truly amazed. Same clear highs but awsome bass so deep that I didn't need a subwoofer. I'm talking hard hitting bass, nice and tight. All that off a 25 Watt per channel RF Punch amp. Anyway, back then the only better speakers that MB Quart made was the Q series which they no longer offer. The Q series was crazy priced at over $1k and the only ones I knew that used them were the guys who compete at stereo competitions. Even there I found plenty of cars using the PSD or P series components. Anyway, the reason I mentioned all this is that the PVI 216 is nicer than my old PSD 216's. The PVI crossovers has more adjustablity down to -5db and there is even a polypropolene cap in there too. By the way, if you decide to set up the Co-axle tweeter mounting method there is a little trick I'd like to share. You have to carefully slide off the red/pink plastic connecter covers on the tweeters in order for them to slide through the opening on the pillar tower. Just hold the metal part of the connector with a pliers and patiently push to slide them off. I saved them and reinstalled them after I fished the wires down voice coil tunnel. I takes a few extra minutes but that way you won't have to cut the tweeter wires off there if you don't want too. Okay so I got off subject a little but the speakers are fantastic and I'm very picky about my audio gear. By the way not sure why the Ref series is selling here for $5 more since it is the next line down from Premium. The top of the line is now the Premium as there no longer is a Q series that I know of, then the Reference Series, Discus Series and the entry level Formula Series. Finally those that claim the MB is not the same as in the past are perhaps those who have had the ultra expensive Q series which I understand was the ultimate speaker series. I can't imagine anything nicer than these PVI's they are truly awsome you won't be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good Speakers   June 3, 2010

These are my first MB's I've ever owned so I can't speak for the older models in comparison. I've had Polk, Boston, MTX, Bose, and Sony in other vehicles in the past. After noticing the price on these MB's, I thought I would give them a try. I was fore warned about the new MB's being made by another company, and should research before buying. After reading other reviews, I couldn't find a reason not to invest in these models. After receiving them and opening the box, I wasn't as excited as I thought I would be. The contruction of these speakers didn't seem that thrilling, and the box had little for literature inside. But knowing that looks can be very deceiving, I still kept my hopes up for a quality product. Installation was a pain due to the lack of clarity in the connection illustrations. Down right poor directions to tell the truth. But anyone with a good understanding of speaker installation can get through it. Once they were installed, the sound made up the difference in the troublesome install. I have 2 sets, front and rear, powered by a Pioneer GM-6400F, with a Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD head unit. No external crossover, only the built in amp LPF, head unit LPF, and supplied crossover with the set. I stuck in the DMB Central Park DVD and was blown away! The clarity of the highs and midrange was awsome. (I also have a power sub for the low range) Unlike any I've ever heard from previous automotive speakers. I know there's higher priced systems than mine, but on my budget, I was very impressed. To really test them out, I stuck in a Steely Dan DVD, and the horn section sounded like they were live inside the car. Needless to say, they passed the test. The only complaint other than the connection illustrations, is the woofer grills. The set is designed to be installed with the tweeter sperate or mounted with the woofer. Mounting them as seperates as I did, the grill looks like it's missing something. I have some ideas to remedy the vacant hole in the grill to get a better look from the grill.

5 out of 5 stars Clear Clear Clear   April 5, 2010

Got these lovely speakers and installed them into a Mazda 3s (head unit Pioneer f900BT)... - all self installed

Sound clarity and texture is good. Sound stage is now very well defined - in that there is distinct left right and center; when i say distinct i mean it's the first thing i noticed - instruments and vocals are very clearly defined and positioned on the stage - nice...

Base is on par with or a little less powerful than stock + I will be installing a Boss Sub (BOSS600) to cover this off until then I am moving the crossover to -1/-2 just to tame the overall sharpness/brightnes of the speakers (personal preference)....

The Crossover box's are big, and in my case they had to go under the front seats as there is no space big enough inside the door or kick panel to accommodate them - I don't see this as negative just a design feature . . .
